 The other day I was asked this great question....

"I’m new to Yoga and I don’t understand how doing Yoga can help you lose weight – can you explain please? I guess I’m used to hearing doing cardio or weights to lose weight but I can’t understand how doing different poses which you don’t really sweat helps you lose weight."

Here is my response...

Hi Mona,

Thanks for your question. And, what a great question it is too...

The answer is YES!

I practiced yoga to help me lose 60 pounds of excess weight and heal my body, and yoga has also helped me to keep off the weight and stay naturally healthy for the past 15 years.

Is Yoga more effective than dieting for Weight Loss?

It is a well documented that approximately 95-99% of all diets fail in the long term. I have found that anything that relies on restriction and deprivation is usually not sustainable. 

The dieting model is essentially a masculine approach to losing weight. Whilst counting calories and eating less calories than what you burn and doing cardio may make rational sense, what it does is place additional stress on the mind and body.  And chronic stress is one of the most common reasons for weight gain.

Yoga works is a very different way. It takes into account our mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of our lives, rather than just our physical bodies.

I know from my own personal experience that yoga can help to reduce chronic stress. It can also help bring harmony to your mind, body and spirit so you can stay naturally balanced over time.

Weight gain is a by product of living a life that is out of balance.

It is vital and important to reduce stress because it is chronic stress that is directly connected to causing systemic body inflammation, hormonal imbalances, immune system disorders, chronic health problems, weight gain, as well as binge eating, emotional eating and food cravings.

If these things are left unaddressed over time, this can affect your self esteem, inner dialogue, beliefs, thought patterns and even the connection to your heart wisdom and intuition.

When you are stressed your body needs healing, compassion, nutrition and gentle nourishment. 

Weight loss is a by product of living a balanced and healthy life.

I call these things your ‘inner world’ – it’s like the wind – you can’t see it but you can feel it, right?

Yoga is part of a healing practice of what I also call ‘the feminine approach’ to weight loss. Losing weight for good is a journey – it’s a healing journey. And, it’s holistic. You have to take into account all aspects of your life – mind, body, heart and spirit.

When you are practicing yoga, you are using your own body weight to build strength, develop mental focus and even create emotional resilience.

I hope this explains things in more detail for you and helps you to understand why yoga is a such an amazing tool and practice for healing and natural health.
