At one of my recent Yoga and Healing Retreats in Turkey, many people shared with me their intention, 'to feel more peaceful'.

Since then, I have been thinking about peacefulness and contemplating what it really means.

Below are some of my musings, questions and thoughts on peacefulness. Some of the questions I asked myself were, 'What is peacefulness?' and, 'Where does it live?'

Also, 'Can peacefulness be found in our jobs, in our relationships or in our bank accounts?'

Does Peacefulness Exist Outside of Us?

Does peace only exist in faraway, magical parts of the natural world, such as the Himalayan mountains and beautiful yoga retreat venues?

Or, is peacefulness a concept, attainable only for the enlightened few such as the wisest monks, spiritual seekers and gurus amongst us?

No, I don't think so.

Peacefulness Lives Within Us All.

Is it possible that peace already lives within?

Yes, I think so.

I believe that everyone, including you and I, can experience beautiful and abundant moments of peace at will, if they know how to activate them. Peacefulness is your natural way of being. What is required is learning how to release all that you do not need or that is out of alignment with your true self. This will automatically tap into the peace that already dwells in your heart, your mind and your body.

During my Yoga and Healing Retreats, there is much energy directed to creating the kind of environment that promotes deep peace, along with healing, rejuvenation and restoration. On these healing retreats, I encourage people to consciously breathe into these joy-inducing moments, so that they can feel spacious, expansionary and expanded on all levels.

So, I've been wondering (and maybe you have too) is it actually possible to create a feeling of peace and relaxation, not just while we are away on holiday or on retreat, but also in our own lives at home?

And, what things do you need to be doing and thinking about to make it so?

Here are 4 simple ideas to help you get started with feeling more peaceful today...

Peaceful Idea #1: Eat Healing Foods

What you eat and put inside your body is your choice. Choose the kinds of foods that heal and soothe your body. Only you know what these foods are, but generally they will be real foods that come naturally from nature.

Look for fresh, natural foods that are locally sourced and in season. Salads, soups, juices, healing broths and vegetables, either raw or lightly steamed, can be a great place to start feeling lighter, happier and more peaceful.

Peaceful Idea #2: Choose Peaceful Thoughts

Psychologists estimate that we might have as many as 60,000 thoughts a day! Interestingly, most of these thoughts, are unconscious thoughts.

Given this, it makes sense that you start to pay attention and become aware of which kind of thoughts you are thinking! Are you thinking stressful thoughts, or are they peaceful ones?

Here’s an exercise to find out:

Set an alarm on your phone, at a certain time, as a reminder to check in with yourself and see how you are doing. I suggest that you do this once a day, then increase the frequency of your check-ins to three times a day. Then as you become more aware of your inner state, 5 or 10 times a day.

Each time you check in with yourself, start by taking a deep breath in and a deep breath out. Then, see what kind of thoughts are you thinking? It can help to write them down in a journal, especially as you start becoming aware of your unconscous thoughts and behaviours.

It is important to remember that you are the only person responsible for the thoughts that you think. So choose the kind of thoughts that make you feel happy and peaceful.

Peaceful Idea #3: Spend Time in Nature

Get off your computer. Turn off your electronic devices and get outside! One of my favorite things to do is to sit on the beach and see a sunset (or sunrise!)

Spending time in nature is a fabulous way to reconnect you with what is important in your life, and will leave you feeling happier and more peaceful.

If you are feeling emotionally worked up about something, it’s a great idea to get outside. Find a park or some grass and walk barefoot. Give yourself a moment to stop, slow down and gain new perspectives on the situation and what is truly important in your life.

Peaceful Idea #4: Get Conscious of Your Environment

What kind of environment do you surround yourself with? Is it filled with toxicity, negative people, clutter, mess or unresolved emotions?

Clear away old stuff and get rid of clutter. Get a warm soapy cloth and start cleaning up your environment. I always recommend that you start with something small, such as your computer keyboard, your mobile phone, your desk drawers and your handbag. Love and polish them until they sparkle with happiness.

Fill your environment with lovely things that fill your heart with joy. One thing I like to do is surround my living spaces with beautiful fresh flowers that perfume and fragrance my house and office.

I choose to feel peaceful right now. I release the expectations and demands of others. That is their stuff. I am not responsible for them. I am responsible for me. I choose to feel lighter and more peaceful right now. I am safe right here, right now.
