On Sunday night, my husband did an unthinkable thing.

It was just 3 days before I was about to fly overseas for a work trip. He emerged from our loft room, laden with plastic boxes containing all my old paperwork, files and folders.

He smiled and said, "I thought you might like to go through these..."

His well-meaning intentions left me feeling anxious, overwhelmed and even a little angry.

I sat there looking at the boxes.

This was the last thing I wanted to deal with.

But, realising that the boxes wouldn't go away by themselves, I decided to deal with it head on. Over the past few days, I have immersed myself in sorting out this old paperwork. I've faced feelings of procrastination, tears, sadness, laughter, and even joy.

And the end result, I have created a brand new filing system for myself. It is simple, elegant and beautifully organised.

Since bringing these folders out of the darkness of the attic and into the light, I have come to better understand clutter and the emotions that get attached to it.

I realised that these boxes of paperwork were not to be looked at with horror, but instead held a special healing gift for me. They were guiding me to release stuff from my past and bring a greater level of clarity to my life.

Your external reality perfectly reflects your internal reality. This means that once you become attuned to your physical environment, you can use clutter as a guide to look within and release what no longer serves you.

By giving yourself permission to look at your physical clutter and deal with it, you can give yourself permission to release and free yourself from the limitations and binds of your past.

Here are the 3 steps that I used to clear my clutter, and that you can use as well...

Step #1. Locate Your Clutter

Clutter can build up anywhere in your life including your house, your car or even in your workplace. Anywhere that you have piles of ‘your things’ and ‘your stuff’ is clutter.

Begin by locating an area of your life that looks and feels cluttered or that you would love to have cleaner, tidier or more organized.

It’s highly possible that you have even said to yourself before, “I really should clear that away.”

Always start by clearing clutter from a small area. Some suggestions might be your fridge, a kitchen cupboard or a small desk drawer.

Once you have located your clutter, it is important to gain an idea of what is the end result you have in mind?

In my situation, I imagined having a functional filing system that was easy to use, efficient but also discrete. I wanted my storage area to feel spacious and to easily accommodate future growth.

Step #2. Organise Your Clutter

Depending on what kind of clutter you decide to work with, will affect how you need to organize your clutter.

If it’s paperwork or photos, it might involve filing, shredding or sorting. If it’s clothes or things, it might involve sorting, selling or gifting them to friends. Other areas of your life might involve cleaning or clearing.

Let yourself be guided by your intuition and be creative and inventive.

What do you want to do with your old things? Keep the energy flowing in your life. Be brave.

Give things away to friends or charity shops.

Or sell them and use that money to invest in yourself, your dreams and the things that really matter to you.

According to Feng shui, what and even where your clutter is stored, can give you powerful clues about what your clutter represents in your life.

As you go about organizing and arranging your clutter, the key thing to know is that your clutter is connected to some emotional aspect in your life.

Handle yourself with kindness as you do this, because as you are physically moving your things around, you are also energetically moving things in your emotional world, as well.

Step #3. Release Your Clutter

If you don’t love it, need it or use it regularly, then know that it’s okay to release it.

You can shred things, sell them, or give them away to a friend or charity shop.

Understand that this process of clearing clutter can bring up strong emotions that are stored within you.

If you feel emotional, let yourself feel the emotions so that you can express and release them.

As you release clutter and old stuff in your life, you create a vacuum. This creates space for new possibilities to enter into your life.
