I totally understand! It wasn’t that long ago that touching my toes seemed a totally impossible dream away… I used to wish my arms were longer! Today, not only is it easy for me to touch my toes, but as a yoga teacher I feel blessed to be able to teach others how to do this too!
In this article, I share 3 secrets that you can use to create amazing flexibility. In many respects, they have little to do with yoga, but yet, I can guarantee that if you give them a go, they will improve your yoga, almost like magic.
Here are my 3 secrets to help you start on your path to becoming more flexible today…
Secret #1: Nutrition creates flexibility
What you eat affects your body and mind, more than most people think.
When you eat nutritionally dense foods, you are eating healing foods. These healing foods naturally create flexibility. As you do this, you naturally cleanse your body of old, excess wastes. As you release junk and toxicity from your joints, your muscles and your body, you become flexible ‘naturally’!
Healing foods that increase your flexibility are whole foods, specifically green vegetables eaten in a natural state. Try juicing them, steaming them, eating them raw; sliced, grated, cut up in salads or a stir-fry.
One of my favourite lunches or snacks is young baby spinach very lightly cooked with a drizzle of organic extra virgin olive oil (or organic/raw butter), served with a dash of Maldon sea salt and a squeeze of lemon or lime juice.
I serve this simple dish in beautiful, large white bowls, garnished with fresh parsley. This tastes delicious, is packed with nutrients, looks fabulous and is ready in minutes.
Secret #2: Gentle stretching creates flexibility
Gentle stretching is a powerful way to reconnect with your body.
Stretching is made up of slow micro movements that are held for longer periods of time. As you stretch, connect with your breath. Stretching works because it gives your muscles time to fully relax. As your body relaxes, it has the potential to release tightness, toxicity and in the process, create more space.
Stretching regularly, in conjunction with the practice of eating healing foods, over a period of time, gentle stretching is one of the most powerful ways you can use to transform your body and mind.
Secret #3: Visualisation creates flexibility
When used correctly your mind can be a powerful tool to help you achieve your goals of creating a flexible body.
Using your imagination, visualize how you would like your body to look and feel.
When using visualization remind yourself to focus on progress not perfection.
The key thing to remember is that when you bring your mind on board you’re your goal for your physical body, total transformation can happen. How things are today, is certainly not how things will always be.
Focus on what you want, not where you are today. This will allow you to create the flexible body of your dreams easily. Flexibility in your physical body invites in the magical energies of flow, grace and ease in your life.
