Did you know that yoga has the ability to help you to heal and transform your body as well as your life?

When I first started yoga I had no idea what I was really doing. On the mat, I initially felt self conscious but I kept practicing anyway.

I was totally surprised and thrilled when I started to notice the positive effects that Yoga was having on my body, mind, emotions as well as my life...

Today, I feel lucky to share with my yoga students my own special blend of Hatha-infused healing yoga. In fact, my yoga classes are designed specifically to help people to heal their bodies and their lives. They involve gentle stretching, setting intentions, embodying positive qualities, visualization, affirmations, body-mind reconnection and deep breathing. Yoga is a powerful tool that can help to heal your body, as well as relax your mind.

Here are 4 key ideas that you can use to help you start healing your body and life with yoga.

1. Be gentle and kind with yourself

Healing takes time so it is important to be gentle and kind with yourself during this healing period. Yoga teaches you to recognize your own beauty and appreciate your body. When you are gentle with yourself, you treat yourself with love and kindness. In this space, transformation can happen and healing can occur.

In the presence of sunshine, water and the right soil conditions a flower will blossom into full bloom. Likewise, the same flower placed in the wrong soil, without water, sunshine or nutrients will soon start to die. Think of yourself like a beautiful flower. When you are being kind to yourself, with words of praise and encouragement you are feeding yourself with all the ingredients you need to blossom and shine.

Being gentle and kind to yourself in your yoga practice allows healing to take place.

2. Yoga can help release limitations

Yoga has the power to heal limitations at the root cause. When you release and let go of limitations, you are able to heal from within. When you release and heal limitations it allows you become so much more of who you really are

Yoga is a beautiful practice that teaches (and reminds us) that we are far more than the limitation that exists in our minds. Negative thoughts, (especially the ones that we tell ourselves) have the ability to limit us in what we say, think and do. Remember that it is only your perceived limitations that stand between you and the potential of what you are truly capable of achieving. You are so much more than your limiting thoughts.

Yoga teaches us to observe and question our limiting thoughts. This is important because it is our thoughts that become our reality. Each thought you think has the power to shape how you perceive reality. It was Mahatma Gandhi who said, “A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.” Choose thoughts that paint a bright future and with your words create a world that you want to live in!

On your yoga mat is a great place to connect with your goals, so that you can achieve your dreams.

3. Celebrate arriving on your yoga mat!

After my yoga classes, my body felt strong and my mind felt peaceful. I began to feel grateful and appreciative of every minute that I was able to spend on my yoga mat. So I encourage you to get on your yoga mat and begin your own personal celebration! Your yoga practice is a healing gift and it is one that only you can give yourself.

Being on the yoga mat is a place for you to be with you. Let your yoga mat, become a special place to celebrate your body and your life. Use your yoga mat as a place to create and expand your sense of possibility. Doing yoga gives you the gift of hearing the inner wisdom that exists inside of you. When you take time during your yoga practice to listen to your inner voice, this is when healing can happen naturally. 

4. Yoga can help transform your life

As you start to practice yoga, you may also experience other physical, mental and emotional benefits. Some people experience having more energy. Other people report sleeping better and others begin to find more mobility and heal from chronic disease. Yoga really can help you to address and transform your health challenges and overcome fear and heal addictions.

I like to think of fears and addictions as spiritual doorways, that take you beyond old habits and instead enable you to courageously and powerfully step forward. Overcoming fears and addictions catalyzes your healing journey. Yoga offers you a healing path that allows you to fully connect to your mind, body, heart and spirit. Yoga allows you to transform and heal different areas of your life, so that you can access your true potential and live a full and satisfying life.
