As a yoga teacher, one of the first things I do in my yoga classes is to invite my students to set an intention for their class.
An intention is often described as 'a thing intended; an aim or plan'. Setting an intention is a way to create your heart's desire. Whatever it is that you would like to manifest in your life, you can use the power of intention to help you achieve them.
Intentions give your mind a single point of focus and keep you living with meaning, aligned with your higher purpose.
I have found that intentions have been really useful in helping me to consciously shape my own life to help me create a life that I love.
Here are 4 helpful ideas to help you set intentions in your own life...
Idea #1: Set your intention in the positive.
When creating your intention, always state it in the positive. Stated in the positive, your intention has the ability to bring extra space into your mind, which you can choose to infuse into your life. An intention stated in the positive, can truly serve and support you.
When you set your intention in the positive you tint your world with positive energy. if you to start wearing a beautiful pair of rose-colored glasses, which suddenly tint your whole world pink.
When you set your intention in the positive, you infuse your world with love, beauty and positivity.
Idea #2: Set your intention in the present moment.
Being in the present moment means to let go of your past and to release anxiety about your future, so you can focus your attention to what is unfolding in your life right now.
If you feel that now is the time to forgive your past, do so with kindness. Realize that you are not the same person that you used to be. Give yourself permission to learn from your mistakes and move on. As you set your intentions, take care to consciously let go of old rules, dogma and expectations (yours and others).
It is also useful to stop worrying about the future. This kind of fear-based thinking is futile. The future is unknown, but chances are the things that you are worried about probably won’t happen anyway.
A more useful way of being is to set an intention to trust that whatever happens you will handle it. Remember that you are a powerful being. Use this energy to create whatever intention you deeply desire. Create an intention that honors the person who you are today and let it nourish you from within.
Idea #3: Let go of fear and doubt.
Setting an intention is something that you can do on your yoga mat as well as your every day life.
Intentions can help you to deal with self sabotage in the form of doubts and fears that may be holding you back from realising your dreams.
Whatever is happening in your life at the moment, know that you can use your intention to help you stay strong and determined. When your align your intentions to your dreams you will unlock a potent manifestation energy that will draw peopla nad circumstances towards you to help you along the way.
Idea #4: Listen to your hearts guidance.
Setting intentions will help you to attune more fully to your hearts guidance.
A common problem that many people experience is busy-ness. This can easily create distraction. When the noise in your daily life becomes loud, it can be difficult to hear the quiet, still voice that lives within. This is the voice of your heart and can offer wisdom and heart guidance.
Making time for intention setting will help you to turn down the volume on this distraction, so you can focus on what is truly most important to you.

The other day I was asked this great question.... "I’m new to Yoga and I don’t understand how doing Yoga can help you lose weight – can you explain please? I guess I’m used to hearing doing cardio or weights to lose weight but I can’t understand how doing different poses which you don’t really sweat helps you lose weight."
